The cover of our book, Noon Spirits: Only a Child Can Hear, was taken at the cemetery at Rocky Springs, Mississippi by Del Leu. Rocky Springs is a historic stop along the Natchez Trace. We have visited this graveyard many times and it does have a very spooky aura about it.
The town was established in the early 1800’s and at its height contained around 4,000 people. The main economic force was cotton. The town seemed to be doomed to failure. Union forces came through on their way to Port Gibson in 1862. After the Civil War, around 1878, a yellow fever outbreak occurred and later the cotton crops were destroyed by an infestation of boll weevils. In 1930 the spring dried up and the last store closed.
Today the Methodist Church and graveyard still stand to remind us of the pioneers who settled this area and the hardships they faced. You can picnic at the site and walk to the church and graveyard. We have spent many a Saturday with our children exploring the area. There is always a lot to be discovered in Mississippi’s rich history.
